need 作情态动词时,主要用于否定句和疑问句,表示“不必、没有必要”。needn't + 动词原形谈论现在或将来:You needn't be so rude.(你没必要这么粗鲁。)needn't have done 谈论过去:本来没有必要做,可是已经做了,常带责备或后悔的语气:You needn't have said that.(你本来不必说那句话的。)注意 needn't 和 mustn't 完全不同:mustn't 是“禁止、不可以”,needn't 只是“没必要”。need 也可以作实义动词,这时用 don't need to / didn't need to。
