(Verb + -ing vs Verb + to)

(Verb + -ing vs Verb + to)

有些动词只能接 -ing(admit、enjoy、finish、mind、avoid),有些只能接 to(want、decide、try、hope、refuse),还有一些两者都可以接(begin、start、like)。 本课中 began to unload、try to run away、admitted hiding、at being discovered 正好把这几种情况都体现出来了。

  1. 1When a plane from London arrived at Sydney airport, workers began to unload a number of wooden boxes which contained clothing.

一般过去时 (Simple Past) · When 时间状语从句, 主语 + began to + 动词原形 + 宾语 + which 定语从句

    • a number of + 复数名词,意为"许多"

  2. 2No one could account for the fact that one of the boxes was extremely heavy.

(Simple Past) · No one + could + account for + the fact + that 同位语从句

    • could 是 can 的过去式

account for 后接名词 the fact,再用 that 从句说明。

  3. 3It suddenly occurred to one of the workers to open up the box.

(Simple Past) · It + occurred to + sb. + to do(不定式作真正主语)

    • it 是形式主语,真正主语是 to open up the box
    • occur to sb.

it occurred to sb. to do

  4. 4He was astonished at what he found.

一般过去时被动 (Simple Past Passive) · 主语 + was astonished + at + what 宾语从句

    • be astonished at 意为"对……
    • what he found 是介词 at 的宾语从句

介词 at 后接 what 引导的从句作宾语,与句 6 的 at being discovered 结构平行。

  5. 5A man was lying in the box on top of a pile of woollen goods.

过去进行时 (Past Continuous) · 主语 + was lying + 地点状语 + on top of 短语

    • on top of 意为"在……上面"
    • a pile of 表示"一堆"

  6. 6He was so surprised at being discovered that he did not even try to run away.

一般过去时 (Simple Past) · 主语 + was so surprised + at + being + 过去分词 + that 结果状语从句 (did not even try to do)

    • at being discovered:介词后接被动动名词
    • try to run away:try + 不定式表示"设法"

    本课核心句:同一句里既有介词 + being done,又有 try + to do。

  7. 7After he was arrested, the man admitted hiding in the box before the plane left London.

    • before the plane left

  8. 8He had had a long and uncomfortable trip, for he had been confined to the wooden box for over eighteen hours.

过去完成时 + 过去完成时被动 (Past Perfect + Past Perfect Passive) · 主语 + had had + 宾语, for + 主语 + had been confined to + 地点 + for 时间段

    • had been confined to 是过去完成时被动

  9. 9The man was ordered to pay £3,500 for the cost of the trip.

一般过去时被动 (Simple Past Passive) · 主语 + was ordered + to do + 宾语 + for 短语

    • order sb. to do 变被动后保留 to do:was ordered to pay
    • for the cost of 意为"作为……
    • £3,500 读作 three thousand five hundred pounds

order sb. to do 的被动式,不定式 to pay 紧跟在 was ordered 后。

  10. 10The normal price of a ticket is £2,000!

(The normal price of a ticket) + is + 表语

    • the price of 表示"……
