语法点：结果状语从句 so…that / such…that (Result Clauses)
结果状语从句用来说明"因为某事程度很深，所以产生了什么结果"，最常用的结构是 so … that 和 such … that。so 是副词，后面接形容词或副词：so bad that、so strict that；such 是形容词，后面接名词（可以带形容词修饰）：such a strict diet that、such bad weather that。that 后面的从句就是产生的结果。本课作者两次用 so … that：一次说 Hugh 胖得太厉害以致决定节食，一次说节食太严格以致他不得不奖励自己。口语中 that 可以省略，但初学时建议保留。
结构

转换关系：so + 形容词 + a / an + 名词 = such + a / an + 形容词 + 名词，如 so strict a diet = such a strict diet。

- [句 1] My friend, Hugh, has always been fat, but things got so bad recently that he decided to go on a diet. — so + 形容词 bad + that 从句，说明情况坏到了什么程度。
- [句 10] He explained that his diet was so strict that he had to reward himself occasionally. — so + 形容词 strict + that 从句，说明节食严格带来的结果。
- [句 6] I rang the bell and was not surprised to see that Hugh was still as fat as ever. — as … as 同级比较，可与 so … that 对比：它只作比较，不引出结果。
- [句 8] It was obvious that he was very embarrassed. — that 从句作主语补足（it 作形式主语），注意与结果从句区分。

- It was such a long list that he could not remember everything on it. 单子太长了，他记不住上面所有的东西。
- He hid the parcel so quickly that I did not see it. 他把包裹藏得那么快，我都没看见。
易错点
- ❌ His diet was such strict that he had to reward himself. → ✅ His diet was so strict that he had to reward himself. —— strict 是形容词，前面要用 so，不用 such。
- ❌ It was so a strict diet that he could not keep it. → ✅ It was such a strict diet that he could not keep it. —— 名词短语前用 such（或写成 so strict a diet）。
- ❌ Things got so bad, so he decided to go on a diet. → ✅ Things got so bad that he decided to go on a diet. —— so … that 结构中引出结果的是 that，不能再用 so。
- ❌ He has so many chocolate that he cannot finish it. → ✅ He has so much chocolate that he cannot finish it. —— chocolate 不可数，用 so much。
