(Reported Questions)

(Reported Questions)

一般疑问句(能用 yes / no 回答的)用 if 或 whether 引导;特殊疑问句保留原来的疑问词(where, who, why…)。 如果主句是过去时(asked、wanted to know),从句时态要往后移一格:does he live → lived, has gone → had gone。本课 Patrick 三次去问同一个问题 'Does Mr. Lane live here?',作者用 he asked if Mr. Lane lived there 把它转述出来,警察的回答也用 told him that … had gone abroad 转述。

Does Mr. Lane live here?' He asked if (whether) Mr. Lane lived there.
Has he gone abroad?' He asked whether he had gone abroad.
Where is Mr. Lane?' He asked where Mr. Lane was.
Why do you keep asking?' The policeman asked why he kept asking.

要点:1) 用 if / whether 或疑问词连接,去掉问号;2) 恢复陈述语序,去掉 do / does / did;3) 主句过去时,从句时态后移;4) here → there,this → that,人称相应变化。
