主句用一般过去时否定，定语从句用过去进行时描述当时正在冒的险。

2They had rushed up to her while she was having a picnic at the edge of a forest with her children and tried to steal her handbag.

当时她正和孩子们在森林边上野餐，那两个人冲到她面前，企图抢走她的手提包。

过去完成时 (Past Perfect) / 过去进行时 (Past Continuous) · 主语 + had rushed up to + 宾语 + while + 过去进行时从句 + and + tried to + 动词原形

• had rushed 表示先于上句动作发生
• while she was having a picnic 用过去进行时表示背景动作
• try to do 试图做

过去完成时倒叙事件起因，while 从句用过去进行时说明当时正在野餐。

3In the struggle, the strap broke and, with the bag in their possession, both men started running through the trees.

在争夺中，包带断了，两个人拿着包开始穿过树林逃跑。

一般过去时 (Simple Past) · 介词短语 + 主语 + 动词过去式 + and + with + 名词 + 介词短语 + 主语 + started + 动名词

• broke 是 break 的过去式
• with the bag in their possession 是 with 复合结构，表示“包在他们手里”
• start doing 开始做

两个并列分句，with 结构作伴随状语说明包已被抢走。

4Mrs. Sterling got so angry that she ran after them.

斯特林夫人气极了，于是追了上去。

一般过去时 (Simple Past) · 主语 + got + so + 形容词 + that + 结果从句

• so angry that 是本课核心结构
• get + 形容词 表示“变得”
• ran after 追赶

so + 形容词 angry + that 从句，说明她因为太生气而追了上去。

5She was soon out of breath, but she continued to run.

她很快就上气不接下气了，但她还是继续跑。

一般过去时 (Simple Past) · 主语 + was soon + 介词短语, but + 主语 + continued to + 动词原形

• but 表转折
• continue to do 继续做

两个分句由 but 连接，先说气喘吁吁，再说仍继续跑。

6When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, so she ran straight at them.

• 此处 so 是连词“所以”，不是 so…that

宾语从句中用过去完成时和过去进行时说明看到的情景；so 引导结果分句。

7The men got such a fright that they dropped the bag and ran away.

那两个人吓了一大跳，扔下包就跑了。

一般过去时 (Simple Past) · 主语 + got + such + a + 名词 + that + 结果从句

• such a fright that 是本课核心结构
• fright 是名词，所以用 such 不用 so
• dropped 和 ran away 并列

such + a + 名词 fright + that 从句，说明受惊的结果是扔包逃跑。

8'The strap needs mending,' said Mrs. Sterling later, 'but they did not steal anything.'

“包带需要修一修，”斯特林夫人后来说，“不过他们什么也没偷走。”

一般现在时 (Simple Present) / 一般过去时 (Simple Past) · 直接引语 + said + 主语 + later + but + 主语 + did not + 动词原形

• need mending 相当于 need to be mended，主动形式表被动
• said Mrs. Sterling 是引述语的倒装
• did not steal anything 一般过去时否定

引语中 needs mending 用主动表被动；后半句用一般过去时否定。
