1. Lesson 38Everything Except the Weather唯独没有考虑到天气

   no sooner … than 和 hardly … when 都表示"一……就……"，强调两个动作紧接着发生。前一个动作用过去完成时（had done），后一个动作用一般过去时。本课讲哈里森一回到英国就买了房，又几乎还没安顿好就把房子卖掉离开，两处都用了这个结构。当 No sooner 或 Hardly 放在句首时，句子要部分倒装：把 had 提到主语前面（No sooner had he returned than …）。注意 no sooner 后面接 than，hardly 后面接 when，不能混用。

2. Lesson 54Sticky Fingers黏糊糊的手指

   no sooner … than 和 hardly … when 都表示“一……就……”，强调第一件事刚做完，第二件事马上就发生了。第一件事（先发生的）用过去完成时 had done，第二件事（紧接着发生的）用一般过去时 did。这个句型有两种写法：正常语序 I had no sooner got back than the doorbell rang；或者把 no sooner / hardly 提到句首，这时主语和助动词 had 必须倒装：No sooner had I got back than the doorbell rang。本课作者刚回到厨房门铃就响了，用的正是 had no sooner … than。

3. Lesson 86Out of Control失控

   hardly…when、no sooner…than、scarcely…when 都表示“一……就……”，强调两个过去动作紧接着发生。先发生的动作用过去完成时 (had done)，后发生的动作用一般过去时 (did)。本课第 3、5、9 句 Both men had hardly had time to realize… when… 就是典型用法。当 hardly / no sooner 放在句首以加强语气时，主句要部分倒装：Hardly had they… when…；No sooner had they… than…。注意 hardly 配 when，no sooner 配 than，不能混搭。
